The truth about Perio-systemic connections

Chronic non-communicable diseases (CNCD) are increasing in prevalence globally, partly as a result of an aging population, but also due to an increase in sedentary lifestyles and refined diets. 92% of older adults have at least one CNCD and 77% have two (NCOA 2015). Periodontitis is a highly prevalent CNCD and is independently associated with several systemic CNCDs. These associations have been controversial and so between 11th - 14th November 2012 The European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) and American Academy of Periodontology joined forces to systematically review the evidence. Iain will summarise the consensus that followed, one that stimulated Denplan on 5th November 2013 to host a policy roundtable debate in Westminster on oral and general health, where Dr Charles Alessi, chair of the National Association of Primary Care Medicine called to action the dental profession to join medical colleagues in combatting CNCD's. In April 2014 the BMJ published an editorial on periodontitis and the EFP published its Manifesto on Perio & general health. Iain will share Key findings illustrated by some stunning video sequences and provide practical advice for dental care professionals to offer their patients.

Aims:

• To share the truth about periodontal-systemic connections according to the current evidence base.
• To visualise the impact of periodontitis as a chronic non-communicable disease (CNCD) and the role of the dental team in managing CNCDs.
• To glimpse into the future role of the dental team in medical management of their patients.

Learning Outcomes:

• Understand the impact of severe periodontitis upon life expectancy.
• Be able to confidently discuss and explain to patients the impact of oral health upon general health without alarming them.
• To understand how to engage with screening for and early diagnosis of CNCDs of ageing.
